I've been hanging out with cool peeps, and enjoying the summer with the love of my life...KISSES!!!<br />
AND i'm rebranding!!! what that means is i won't be here on frugal artist much :( i find it sad since this site is my longest running online presence. why am i rebranding? this whole shameless thing is taking over and i need a dedicated site to all things shameless...i'll do my best to keep you up-to-date with all my frugal happenings with the house move and all which means redecorating, shopping! being creative!!!<br />
but back to shameless...i need to see if my brother can AND has the time to design some cool logos and stuff and then i need to design a simple straight forward wordpress site on all the shameless happenings. i need my own #hashtag too! any ideas? anyways...here's my latest and 2nd last video up on YouTube.com/frugalartist<br />

<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/nycdreams2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/nycdreams2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
i moved here to nyc chasing dreams. my dreams happened to include love (my husband) and creating art. i've been living here for 2 years and dayum! this city is something specially. most new yorkers will tell you the same thing, "i have a love/hate relationship with new york". there have been times where i straight hated this town and everything in it. but the alternative? seriously? there is none...at least not at this stage of my life. this city forces you to quit or succeed. take it or leave it. bottom line.<br />
i can say as of late my whole disposition has changed drastically. maybe God is saying, "give this kid a break" but i'm finally getting one! maybe i always have and i just couldn't see it. but yeah...amazing things have transpired in these past 2 days (i will elaborate in the upcoming weeks). my life hasn't "changed" but my perception of life is a complete 180 from where it was even last year. maybe it's because i started believing and having faith again. for whatever reason i thought being 'mature' and responsible meant sacrificing what i love for what makes "sense". i tried that and was a miserable human being and it showed in ALL areas of my life. thanks to this whole #shameless campaign i'm back to my cooky cray-cray self. i'm really beginning not to give a damn what that stupid little inner voice thinks nor what others think for that matter! i care about responsibilities and priorities and even opinions of others but life is about living and dreaming and having fun and being free. i'm slowly but surely setting myself free from my own insecurities and mental limitations and it is SOOOOO liberating! it's so #shameless!!!<br />
believe in yourself and just do it! if you quit something and feel great, then clearly that was the right move, but if you quit and are unhappy, i implore you to revisit those dreams. you probably simply need to try another tactic. there are multiple ways to end up at your destination. work harder, work smarter and just start thinking creatively and out the box :)<br />
<br />
i love you guys! thanks for your encouraging words and support.<br />

but i digress. MAKEUP! what better way to snag em than look your best?! here are my tips to trick those suckers :)<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/o_gi1ne1sU0" width="560"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
makeup used:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Face wash- <b>Dr. Bronner's Organic Pure Castile</b>, peppermint </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Moisturizer- <b>Avalon Organics</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Concealer- <b>Rimmel</b> (soft honey)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Primer- <b>Tart</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Foundation- <b>Tart</b> (warm walnut), love this line!!! all natural</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Powder- <b>Ruby Kisses</b> $5, i bought this on 125th for my RuPaul drag face not wanting to spend $20+ and surprisingly this stuff gets the job done! this brand is hypo-allergenic, non-comeogenic, and talc-free...SCORE</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Eye brows- <b>Lancome</b>, but use whatever! my mom gave this to me so imma use it til it's gone :) i would totally go for a drugstore brand though</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Eye primer- <b>MAC</b> (bamboo)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Eye shadow- <b>MAC</b> (arena and cork), cheap drugstore grey and black...i can't remember the brand but it was cheap!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Mascara- <b>L'Oreal Voluminous</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Lipstick- <b>MAC (frost)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

what am i willing to sacrifice?
i definitely am not trying to buy a shoe box in Williamsburg but the alternative? ARGH!!!
anyways! RENT SUCKS PEEPS!!! save your funds! buy a home! what we pay on rent is such a waste! no tax credits! no investments! just straight leeching!<br />
$1,000/month on rent for 1 year = $12,000<br />
$12,000 x 5 years = $60,000!!!!<br />
that's a 20% down payment on a $300,000 home! WTH?!!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/dream3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="261" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/dream3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
it looks exactly like these!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/dream1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/dream1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
but in the hood!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/dream2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/dream2.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>

i was fortunate to attend the wedding of Raye aka <a href="http://fortheloveofvictoryrolls.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">itsmyrayeraye</a> and Eric Boyce's wedding two weeks ago. such a cute and intimate wedding! these two love birds remind me of the <a href="http://frugalartist.blogspot.com/2009/07/im-married.html" target="_blank">hubs and i 3 years ago</a>. a new york city hall wedding with those closest and me snapping away in the background :)
you don't need to have a crazy over the top wedding to get married. and you definitely don't need to be rolling in dough. all you need is love.<br />
<br />
i edited the photos in both color and this slight black and white sepia tone and to my surprise we all loved the latter. i'm all about color but there's just something about this quality that makes it so timeless.<br />
<br />
Raye styled it up in this cute strapless dress with floral embellishments, glitter pumps, red lipstick, black liner for days and turned it out!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
to process these images i used<i> Nelly Nero's Black and White Set action, Classic Black</i> followed by <i>Lucky Dip</i> with minor adjustments to the sepia tone.</div>

now some peeps think i'm uber confident to walk up to strangers and maybe i am but that doesn't mean i don't feel awkward and scared! cause i do! but then i think, "hey, this guy is asking me for a minute of my time so why not ask him a minute of his?"
but as i said, do the thing that scares you. because the more you do it the more confident you become. AND great content for my viewers :)

The cool thing with Air BnB is individuals are putting their homes up. You can rent a couch, bed, or bedroom depending on your budget. The great thing is this can allow for versatility around the city. Stay a couple nights in Manhattan, then head out to Brooklyn.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was the first hostel I stayed at years ago. Located on the Upper West Side by Columbia University. You literally only have a bed. The bathrooms are communal and there's an option of shared "dorm" room style or your own private room. I suggest private.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
now that you have options for stay here in NYC, come out and visit me!!!</div>

<br />
I make one video on curly hair and my inbox has been exploding with followers everywhere! too bad i didn't make a career as a curly hair expert! Thanks guys for all the support. My YouTube channel however isn't a curly hair channel nor is this blog. For extensive, in-depth knowledge I recommend <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/longhairdontcare2011" target="_blank">Long Hair Don't Care</a>, <a href="http://www.acurlsbf.com/" target="_blank">Around the Way Curls</a>, <a href="http://heyfranhey.com/" target="_blank">Hey Fran Hey</a>, and <a href="http://www.lacocobella.com/" target="_blank">La Coco Bella</a> to name a few. It's always good to see what others are doing but most importantly it's key to listen to your hair. And what works for one may not work for you, so continue to experiment and listen to your curls.<br />
As with every other curly I've gone through great lengths to find out what works for me and I'm still on the search. But yes I am a recent convert and love the Shea Moisture line although I'm opening to looking for another conditioner. I found the one I used doesn't have as much slip as I'd like. BUT I LOVE that Parnevu deep conditioner. So far, that's the only deep treatment I've used that leaves my hair feeling soft and moisturized and I've been using it for the last 3 years!<br />
But to answer your questions...<br />
1) When I go to bed I put my hair in either a pineapple ponytail much like this photo here but not so "wide":<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://distilleryimage1.s3.amazonaws.com/b1d142b4a06111e1989612313815112c_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://distilleryimage1.s3.amazonaws.com/b1d142b4a06111e1989612313815112c_7.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
OR </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
if it's later in the week and my curls are all over the place i'll do a brush out and sleep with my hair in a high bun and wear it out all frizzy Diana Ross styles the following morning and thereafter. frizzy, unruly curls can work if you WERK-it-out! and yes, i do sleep with a satin pillow case as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/bedtimelook2" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/bedtimelook2" style="cursor: move;" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
OR</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
If I have the time and my hair is really hurting with split ends and dryness as it is now (i need to trim asap!) I'll twist my hair and sleep with a cap. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
i feel sorry for men married to curlies that take care...this cap is so not hot. marry someone who loves you cap and all :) thanks boo bear!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
now if i do twist it overnight i use a leave-in conditioner, which of late has been Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothy. I have in the past used the line Olive Oil which was my swear by product that you can read all about <a href="http://frugalartist.blogspot.com/2011/10/curls-curls-curls-curls.html" target="_blank">here in this blog entry</a>. this Shea stuff is perfect for "style". the next day you simply unravel and rock the twist out as is or separate the curls for a more natural look .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>now when i plan to wash my hair, the night before</b> i'll use Vatika. this is super oily and greasy! so beware. this isn't the type of oil i'd just put in my hair and go. it's purpose for me is to moisturize my hair before i strip it the next day with shampoo. the thing about most oils is it usually just sits on top of the hair shaft not moisturizing . i think the exception is Moroccan oil, however it's pricey! you really need something to soften the hair cuticle <b>before</b> you use an oil, which i didn't discuss in my video because i only do this other extra step if i have time and i try to keep my videos short, BUT i use <b>IC Leave-in Hair & Scalp treatment</b>, and then the Vatika so the hair can absorb the nutrients of the great oils fused in with Vatika. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/curls3" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/curls3" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
empty! gotta get me more :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<center style="text-align: left;">"did you untwist your hair before diffusing?" NO!</center><center style="text-align: left;">i did not twist my hair only to untwist it before drying...leave your hair alone...the first twist i did naturally unravelled when i was diffusing. the second, 2 strand twist will need to be "untwisted" once dry. this method will leave you with looser curls. i used large sections when twisting my hair simply because i want the process to be over and done with, but if you want that "perfect" curl then use smaller sections. the smaller the section the more defined the curls :)</center><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/curls1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/curls1" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
this is what my hair looks like when i DON'T twist and simply put styling product and air dry...not very special and rather flat looking</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

AND you're helping artist get their work heard! and there are dope peeps here!
i most recently featured the amazing sounds of Viral Groove in my Ultimate Curly Hair Tutorial and love these other track right here:<br />
<iframe frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F47269633&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true&color=ff7700" width="100%"></iframe>
<iframe frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F33070190&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true&color=ff7700" width="100%"></iframe>
<iframe frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F47270144&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true&color=ff7700" width="100%"></iframe> i've worked with the chill vibes of Clear Blue...
<iframe frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F42454409&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true&color=ff7700" width="100%"></iframe>
and of course my first find Tinush who has that fun, quirky quality similar to my persona:
<iframe frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F34116664&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true&color=ff7700" width="100%"></iframe>
and this play list right here is great when i edit photos for hours and days on end...2hrs and this dude mixes everything i love, hiphop, orchestra, electronica, jazz...not originally produced but definitely wicked skills and brilliance in mixing
<iframe frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F46864151&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true&color=ff7700" width="100%"></iframe><br />

and where exactly have you been missy?! hummmm?<br />
excuses aside, sometimes i just don't wanna blog. but yeah....<br />
what i love about this #shameless challenge is that i'm forcing myself to learn and do things i'd rather not do. me and final cut pro aka fcpx are getting close these days and we're understanding one another more. i'm really excited to start working on my documentary now that i've learned all these cute tricks AND i have a better understanding for quick vids which will really help out when i start to edit my teaser trailer :) but yeah...more on that soon!<br />
NOW for all you curlies...Maya present's: The Ultimate Curly Hair Tutorial!!! i keep getting harassed about my hair and apparently if you have curly hair and a YouTube channel you better make at least one video address the most noticeable thing in the shot. i went through great lengths to bring this to you so appreciate :)<br />

<div>
thanks to wedding photography, i've learned the art of documentary photography. yes you can go for that one epic shot, but it's also quite interesting to communicate a story through several shots. John wanted me to do the latter with our session. an image by itself may say very little but the minute you pair it beside another a story begins to develop. it usually takes me some time to choose images that best communicate a story...it'll evolve but here it is so far:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/johnviljoen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="521" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/johnviljoen.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
my fav photoshop actions are these by<a href="http://www.redleafboutique.com/" target="_blank"> Red Leaf Boutique</a>. i learned photography on an old skool Nikon FE film slr, which is why i'm in LOVE with these actions...they give it that film quality i oh so miss.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/RL1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/RL1" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
with RL actions above, and without below</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/RL2" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/RL2" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
these actions are a pretty penny for someone as "frugal" as me but they're well worth it. i only wish they had them for Light Room. sad face :(</div>mayahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06829951484876344197noreply@blogger.com1Toronto, ON, Canada43.653226 -79.383184343.469412 -79.69904129999999 43.837039999999995 -79.0673273tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227407142478985145.post-36037871820328039082012-05-29T19:41:00.001-04:002012-05-29T19:41:59.767-04:00Vintage Shopping in Brooklynfinally some time! i spent my memorial day yesterday sleeping in and biking around the city. i took my under developed muscles and hubby and biked down to Williamsburg.<br />

a flight from NY to TO usually cost around $350/person plus $100 each way for the pooch. that would be $900. although the flight is only 1hr, getting to the airport takes another 1hr, and since Toronto is an international flight we have to arrive 2hrs ahead, plus customs, who like to pick on me, plus picking up any checked luggage, plus driving from the airport home...that's about 5hrs. driving directly from NYC is 8hrs..7 if we decide to speed demon it out. the extra 3hrs and spending $250 on the car rental and around $160 on gas with a grand total of $410 versus $900? yup i'll keep my $490 in my savings account thank you very much.</div>

what a learning curve! i was forced to learn the new Final Cut Pro 10 (fcpx) thanks to iMovie constantly crashing on my little macbook. but what a blessing! i was doing things the long tedious way!!! so now i'm working on the beast of my macbook pro (which i jacked from my husband), trying to take over the world! the entire process of my interview videos take anywhere from 8-15hrs of work. filming takes roughly 2hrs, editing is ridiculous! 6-10hrs since i'm learning as i go along. constant youtube surfing learning how to do the simplest of task. next week better be faster!!! i guess i get to strip my eyes away from this laptop once it's exporting...<br />
i think moving forward i'll do like "study" "interview" videos every other week and fun dinky videos in between. i totally have to get into the nitty gritty of shameless self-promotion...soon...next week!<br />
i plan on revamping mayawashington.com to showcase everything in a one-stop, links to my photography, this blog, twitter, instagram, facebook, videos, all things maya :)<br />
it's happening, 48 more weeks to go!<br />
the major plus about this all?! i start editing the trailer for my '80s doc and it doesn't seem so daunting now :)<br />
practice, practice, practice!<br />

<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/mom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/mom.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Happy Mother's Day all you beautiful mother's out there!<br />
I love my mom more than I can begin to articulate. My mother is my idol and the definition of strength. She instilled in me what it means to love unconditionally, to fight, to survive, to celebrate, to be grateful and most of all, to have faith. I've had my highs and lows with her; she was my best friend as a child, my enemy as a teen, and my best friend now as an adult and wife. Life isn't easy and when i crack and fall apart at the seams she's the one I turn to and helps to keep me together.<br />
She raised me and my brother as a single parent and sacrificed more than I can ever repay her in this life time. I hope to repay her by passing what she's taught me to my kids.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/mom2012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/mom2012.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you mom for being wonderful, for being my super hero, for being my mom :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/momnum2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/momnum2.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh and now I'm lucky to have a second mom! My mother-in-law! Thank Gad we more than get along. With my mom being back home in Toronto it's good to have a second mother. My NYC mom keeps me fed, healthy, laughing and sane! And funny enough I look more like mama #2! She raised my hubby to be the wonderful man he is today. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you mother's everywhere! Continue to be strong and transform those demon children into angel's of tomorrow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!</div>mayahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06829951484876344197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227407142478985145.post-58537035809171383122012-05-11T18:59:00.000-04:002012-05-11T18:59:18.120-04:00second geari feel like i got my homework done early! after posting my latest video on YouTube "talk about what?" a flood of ideas came pouring in thanks to my real world and cyber friends. i guess i can't stand talking about me..."get over it maya!" i'll be stalling again this coming week with an inspiring interview with Andrea Lewis from <a href="http://thosegirlsarewild.com/" target="_blank">TGAW</a>, but Tuesday, May 22 will be <b>maya's world</b> in full effect. the best thing about this #shameless challenge is the massive support i've been receiving from everyone. i really had no idea so many people were in the same boat as me. so thank you for supporting and encouraging me to get over this nonsense. i haven't even begun to scrape the surface of #shameless. i'm still not doing a very good job...gotta kick myself into second gear...<br />
lots of fun entertaining things are lined up. my biggest challenge is balancing my personal, career, and creative life. so many diy's i want to do but the time! it'll come...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://distilleryimage1.instagram.com/8d0837d69bba11e181bd12313817987b_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://distilleryimage1.instagram.com/8d0837d69bba11e181bd12313817987b_7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
in terms of this challenge, moving forward i'll be dissecting #shameless with interviews and discussions as well as #shamelessly plugging myself and the fun things it is i do. a still from footage with Andrea Lewis on location at The Highlinemayahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06829951484876344197noreply@blogger.com0The High Line, 519 W 23rd St, New York, NY 10011, USA40.747257 -74.005228640.7352275 -74.024969599999991 40.759286499999995 -73.9854876tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227407142478985145.post-50634275037625595082012-05-09T17:01:00.000-04:002012-05-09T17:01:23.340-04:00back to beautyi'm super excited to be working tomorrow on my first beauty test here in NYC!!! i'll be working with the talented makeup artist <a href="http://cargocollective.com/cassirenee" target="_blank">Cassi Renee</a> and a gorgeous new face with <a href="http://www.musenyc.com/" target="_blank">MuseNYC</a> i go through these phases where i have a love hate relationship with fashion/beauty photography. i was so into fashion photography until i grew up and started to get to know some of these models and how cut throat this industry can be and how it scarred a model's self perception. i also didn't like how fashion photography was perceived as a pedestal and everything else was a "job" to support a photographer's passion for fashion. don't get me wrong i love fashion and beauty but LIFE is beautiful! life is so vast and i appreciate the beauty it has to offer which is why my photography is so broad these days. i guess i just needed to re-explore the beauty life had to offer and capture it in photographs before getting back into fashion/beauty. i'm confident i've found a balance which is now reflected in my work. we can all find beauty or the grotesque in anything...i'm looking forward to seeing the beauty in "beauty" photography. here's my inspiration for tomorrow:<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://distilleryimage2.instagram.com/90d0f1629a1311e19e4a12313813ffc0_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://distilleryimage2.instagram.com/90d0f1629a1311e19e4a12313813ffc0_7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
tomorrow's shoot is a combination of beauty and art. my goal is to blow the prints up super large, frame them and hang them on my living room wall. i'm all about supporting artist by buying art, but as of late i'm itching to create my own. wish me luck!</div>mayahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06829951484876344197noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227407142478985145.post-16214588780847895662012-05-06T23:24:00.001-04:002012-05-06T23:24:38.865-04:00that's scary<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/onething" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/onething" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
this is a beautiful way to live life.<br />
i'm slowly but surly getting through my fears and that's thanks to facing them head on. and once you tackle them you realize it's not so bad. keep at it and eventually it becomes a thing of the past.<br />
even though i kick myself for doing this 365 day shameless challenge i realize this is a blessing. i can't wait till this "shame" becomes "less" and yesterdays news. thanks for tuning in and supporting ya'll! it really mean a lot! THANK YOU!!!mayahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06829951484876344197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227407142478985145.post-16042106399188758432012-05-05T16:17:00.000-04:002012-05-06T09:21:08.683-04:00how to annihilate NYC roachesconversations with a new yorker include anything from fashion to politics to roaches. yes ROACHES! one good reason not to live in this city. for a lady such as myself, who can't stand bugs, this meant war when i first moved here nearly 2 years ago. i remember several dramatic encounters with these scary beings. my very first one...i was visiting NYC for like the second time, walking around at night with my fellow Torontonian friend in the lower east side. the season was fall and the street light was reflecting off the autumn leaves that scattered the sidewalk. being the child i am i started kicking up the leaves. it took me a few seconds to register that these weren't beautifully coloured autumn leaves but in fact giant nyc roaches partying on the side. WTF?!!! that story is pretty dramatic and i have yet to encounter anything as disgusting as this but yeah...GROSS! when i first moved into my apartment these guys were just chilling on counter tops. EFF THAT!!! this meant war. ya'll can crawl up and down the streets but party in my crib?! i tried the roach bombs, sprays, traps...temporary results!<br />
while visiting my 'rents-in-law's home i noticed not one single roach...and they had food out! "what are you doing and tell me now!" my dominican's hooked me up with the only formula that works<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
pharmacy grade boric acid</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
white sugar </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
eggs</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
fork:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
my mother-in-law used half of the boric acid bottle (2oz)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
6 eggs</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
keep adding white sugar and mash it up with a folk until it turns into the consistency of play dough</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
roll them up in balls and shove them in corners of cabinets and closets</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
keep them away from your pets. when i just got Jackie i didn't puppy proof yet and she accidentally ate one and threw up...eeks!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
if you happen to live around dominican's, you might be able to buy it premade but i like knowing the secrets. i guess the idea is the roaches smell the eggs and like the tasty sugar and die from the acid. i remember the first time i put this out i cried! it was like a roach fest, they all came out of hiding and i'm thinking we didn't use enough boric acid and they're just multiplying! a couple days later GONE! those suckers have died somewhere and i am the victor of this battle!!!</div>mayahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06829951484876344197noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227407142478985145.post-65320451851997963572012-05-04T16:01:00.000-04:002012-05-04T16:01:33.079-04:00pants on fiya!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

i'm such a casual-boheem-joggers-hair out girl...no nail polish, no lipstick, just basics. but all these photos on instagram are making me envy these fun designs. so now i'm officially addicted to nail polish and nail art. i usually only get my nails done when i'm hanging out with my homie Dahlia, but me and miss Andrea Lewis got our nails done at the salon over a week ago and i'm looking at the nail tech like, "give me that nail polish and let me do it". she free handed a black french manicure and it wasn't as clean as i would have liked it. however, it was a nice treat having someone hook me up especially my toes. but as you all know i'm about saving my pennies. this look i did at home cost under $5. i already had black and pink nail polish which i bought for $1 each on 125th in Harlem. i just got those stickers for french manicures for $2 and instead flipped them upside down. i love how black nail polish looks as an accent but you can use any colour combination. make sure the base color is DRY! i put the sticker on too soon and it ended up peeling off the pink. but yeah...you can do so many designs if you play around and get creative.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
even Jackie's upping her style game :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mayawashington.com/blog/nailsdid2" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://mayawashington.com/blog/nailsdid2" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
you do realize nail art on dogs would be a sensation...especially here in nyc</div>

i can't tell you how scary this project is. not knowing what you're doing and revealing how clueless and shameless i'm trying to be, is pretty cray-cray. this took me FOREVER to edit. mainly because i interviewed my friend and we kept rambling for a good 45mins. that along with my own video and chopping off as much fat as possible to condense a somewhat coherent story into 3-4mins is pretty hard for me, compounded with technical difficulties, AND i've also been sick, yet again and knocking in and out of consciousness. i imagine it'll get easier. this experiment is pretty interesting. for now it's an idea/discussion, but i have so much more to go! i have to really get into the shamelessness of it all and i'm still only skimming the surface. any who...check out the vid:<br />
